Here is the slab I out on a hump mold. I should have put wax paper in-between the clay and the bowl because the clay stuck and wouldn't come off cleanly. I think the idea also would have been more successful if I used the inside of the bowl instead.
Hallelujah, I finally finished!!!! This piece is a shadow box with layers of paper. One technique I learned was how to cut curves with an X-Acto. For large curved, I would sometimes twist the paper while holding the knife still. When you cute intricate designs, you first cut the details then you cut out your shape. That way you have more support while you cut out tiny pieces.
I was successful at cutting where I planned. I ran into several challenges, and with help came up with successful solutions. Next project, I will choose a less time-consuming design. In the future, I probably will have a simple outline and if time permits, add details as I work. The quote "A fish may love a bird, but where would they live?" from Ever After: A Cinderella Story inspired me to create this scene. That quote drove me to finish this project and incorporate everything I planned. I participated in ArtSpark and worked on a chalk square with 3 of my friends. These pictures show our progress and the final product. we used chalk pastels and it was SUPER fun!
I did a orchid clay tile and it was really successful because I achieved the colors I wanted in the kiln.
I also cut out koi fish from paper and that mini project is incorporated into my final piece. I really liked the paper medium and I was really successful with the texture and folding the paper. I did a rain boots in a puddle for my cardboard relief project. Cardboard was hard for me because it only has 3 'shades'.
My artist is Calvin Nicolls, who is from Ontario, Canada. He primarily layers cut paper to create wildlife relief sculptures. Calvin Nicolls has a degree in graphic design and Follett Library Resources of Chicago hired him to create a collection of pieces for their offices. In 2002, Mr. Nicolls created fifteen pieces for the picture book The World Before This One.
One interesting thing I found was a video from when he visited Wisconsin. It demonstrates how he adds texture to a feather using a burnisher tool (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xrEZgUlnwE). His website is at - http://calvinnicholls.com I feel like my piece was pretty successful. I wanted the cup to resemble a spiral staircase and the pattern turned out well. In a way, I wish I made the steps larger and used more of the cup.
